To celebrate the recent milestone of Sandusky County's bicentennial year celebration in 2020, the historical society has initiated a program to make available historical plaques for homes or buildings. The plaques are made of sturdy bronze by CenTec, they can be mounted on a variety of surfaces, and can be ordered from the historical society at a cost of $150. It is hoped that these distinctive plaques will not only call attention to our many historically significant houses and buildings all around the county, but will also make people more aware of our unusually rich historical heritage. One of Sandusky County's outstanding features is the wide variety of architectural styles reflected in its many beautiful and well preserved homes and buildings. They are a visual textbook of a golden era in American architecture that flourished in the 19th and early 20th century. The historical society is planning to organize both walking and driving tours to highlight our outstanding homes and buildings; and displaying historical plaques not only shows pride of ownership, but also encourages people to participate in these tours or make self-guided tours of their own. The most important qualifications for a historical plaque include the following:

  • A home or building over 100 years old.

  • A home or building that played a role in the history of the town or county in some way

  • A former resident or owner who had a role in the history of the town or county.

  • A home or building associated with popular folklore of the town or county.

  • A home that is well-preserved.

  • A home or building of architectural significance.
